China's share falls in Japanese textile & apparel imports

The share of China in Japan’s textile and apparel imports has declined during the past few years, according to relevant statistics.

In 2010, Chinese textiles and garments enjoyed 77 percent share in Japanese market, which declined to 75 percent in 2011, 73 percent in 2012, and further down to 71 percent in the first half of the current year.

In fact, Asean has overtaken Japan as the third largest export market for Chinese textiles and apparel this year.

Diaoyu Islands dispute and the sharp depreciation of the Japanese yen compared to the Chinese renminbi have affected Sino-Japanese trade in recent times.

In the first half of this year, China’s total textile and apparel trade stood at US$ 139.83 billion, showing an increase of 11.8 percent. Of this, exports accounted for US$ 127.23 billion, growing at 12.1 percent, while imports were worth US$ 12.6 billion, an increase of 9.5 percent.

Chinese textile and clothing exports have grown at a rate higher than the average growth of all sectors, but the Chinese textile enterprises, in general, are under tremendous pressure due to RMB appreciation, rising labour costs, lack of demand in international markets, and other factors.
