Lobbyists to improve image & US market share

India and Bangladesh are stepping up efforts to boost their market share in the US textile market.

India's US market share is up 26 percent whereas Bangladesh had achieved a rise of 8.35 percent in 2004-05.

Bangladesh is trying to improve its image which was marred by human rights violations reports, corruption and militancy and has appointed lobbyists, Washington Group and Ketchum Washington, to interact with US administration and build positive image of industry and the country amongst US policy makers.

The lobbyists have been offered monthly retainer ship of $45,000 each along with pocket expenses.

They are also supposed to help Bangladesh gain concession for textile exports to US.

Meanwhile, India's textile industry has moved up from $13.5 billion in 2004-05 to $17 billion in August to February period.

Export earnings have substantially come from handicrafts sector followed by wool industry, at Rs 15,256 crore and Rs 4,523 crore respectively.

Bangladesh exports for same period reached $6,624.2 million, up from $5,618.12 million in previous year.

Woven garment sector earned $2615.48 million. Knitwear items earned $2,369 million against $1,819.67 million during same period.
