Mexico's textile and apparel sector's market share for many product categories is on decline in the United States.
One was cotton apparel category, as it was responsible for fall in cotton spinning and weaving output of 6.5 percent in 2005.
Cotton sector lost market share to man-made fiber. The volume of man-made fiber exports to the U.S. is presently more than double the volume of cotton product exports
Mexico's textile and apparel exports to the U S market in January through February period declined 10.7 percent in volume.
Cotton apparel exports decreased even further registering a fall of 14.3 percent.
Exports of non-cotton apparel items fell 21.8 percent during the period.
Despite these conditions, cotton yarn and fabric output, as measured by INEGE Index of Output (1993=100), remained firm at 82.3 in January 2006 which was marginally better than January 2005 output of 81.9, which was considered a record low at that time. January production, however, was substantially below the 2005 monthly average production index of 89.9.
Downstream, apparel production fell 4.6 percent from year-ago levels.
