Transportation of wool sheared from half the Falkland Islands' sheep population is scheduled to take place through rail freight as part of solving the problem of its transportation.
Twice a year, Falkland Islands exports wool sheared from its 60,000 sheep population.
Wool from 30,000 sheep was exported to the UK from Falkland Islands in March.
The wool was brought into Southampton docks to be transported on EWS inter modal rail freight services to Wakefield Euro Rail Freight Terminal.
Distribution to end customer in Bradford was completed by road by Bower Green.
Transportation took place in 20ft containers numbering 109 as part of logistical operation which involved wool being cleared by customs and checked by officials from Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Helene Lyall, EWS Sales and Development Manager, said this operation of wool transportation takes place twice a year and is a major part of Falkland Islands export business.
This was the very first time that railway has transported wool, thereby providing a cost effective solution.
