Garment and textile exports in first four months of 2006 reached US $1.74 billion, an increase of 38.7 percent over same period last year.
The US has emerged as country's largest market for garment and textiles, buying $432 million worth of products from Viet Nam, registering a year-on-year increase of 35.7 percent, according to General Statistics Office.
Exports to the EU reached $172 million and Japan recorded $89.5 million.
Viet Nam's garment and textiles export to African market increased 400 percent over same period last year.
Deputy Trade Minister Le Danh Vinh, attributed these achievements to clear and open policy on quota management.
The Industry Ministry has plans to invest into garment and textiles sector to develop it into a leading export earning sector by 2015.
For this purpose, the Ministry will invest about $3 billion in developing garment and textiles sector through 2010.
From this investment sum, $180 million will be spent on materials; $2.27 billion on textile and dyeing projects; $443 million on garment projects and $200 million on trade centres and personnel training.
Capital for this investment will be secured through foreign investors, loans from investment funds, land funds and securities market.
