Textile exports reach Rs405 crore, reports MEPZ

Madras Export Processing Zone Special Economic Zone (MEPZ-SEZ) reported 40 percent increase in exports yeilding 1,901 crore in 2005-2006 as compared to Rs 1,377 crore last year.

Electronics, engineering and textile products were the major contributors with a rise of 34, 46 and 25 percent, respectively.

MEPZ revealed that the textile sector accounted for a massive Rs405 crore worth of exports.

MEPZ was established in 1984 with the objective of promoting foreign direct investment, enhancing foreign exchange earnings, and creating greater employment opportunities.

The zone was converted into a Special Economic Zone on January 1, 2003.
