Peru's textile exports jump in Jan-May'14

The exports of textiles, excluding apparel, from the Latin American country of Peru jumped 33.8 percent to US$ 252 million, compared to shipments valued at $189 million in the corresponding period last year, according to the figures from Banco Central de Reserva del Peru (BCRP).

According to a report released by the Institute of Economic and Social Studies (IESS) of the National Society of Industries (SNI), fabrics constituted 56.5 percent of the $252 million worth of textile exports, while yarn and textile fibres accounted for 24.6 percent and 18.9 percent, respectively.

The IESS report also showed that the index of industrial growth of textile sector showed a 1.6 percent rise in January-April 2014, compared to the same period last year, when a drop of 5.75 percent was recorded.

According to National Tax Administration (SUNAT) of Peru, the total textile and apparel exports fetched $582 million in January-April 2014 period, showing a growth of 5.2 percent year-on-year. Of this, Peru’s exports to the United States climbed 17.8 percent year-on-year to $239 million, while those to Venezuela dropped 11.1 percent to $88 million.

Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil were the other top importers of Peruvian textiles and clothing during the first four months of this year, and they accounted for $34 million, $31 million and $29 million, respectively.

Product-wise, T-shirts and Polo shirts earned $127 million and $77 million, respectively during the four-month period.
