Footwear industry imported materials worth $304.6 million in first quarter of 2006, recording an increase of 26 percent over same quarter of 2005, Ministry of Trade (MOT) reported.

Foreign invested enterprises accounted for $209 million, posting an increase of 23.33 percent.

Whereas domestic enterprises represented a rise of 41.79 percent against revenue worth $95 million, accounting for 31.19 percent of entire turnover, added the sources.

Most of the domestic enterprises have been importing their requirements for footwear materials from Taiwan and China due to its low price and availability position, MOT stated.

Footwear materials imported include tanned leather, leatherette fabric and shoes sole for production of key goods which include leather capped- shoes, leatherette shoes and plastic shoes.

Japan, Thailand, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have also been accessing the Vietnam footwear markets.
