CAB ups cotton exports at 33 lakh bales

In cotton year 2005-06, India is expected to export 33 lakh bales, 261 percent more than the 2004-05 figure of 9.14 lakh bales (170 kg each), estimates Cotton Advisory Board (CAB).

On December 7, 2005 CAB estimated 25 lakh bales of exports and later, it revised the figure to 33 lakh bales.

In year 2004-05, cotton exports were down 24.5 percent compared to 2003-04.

Textile Commissioner JN Singh informed that India has first time crossed 200 lakh bales of production. Gujarat's cotton production was encouraging, and it has contributed around 31 percent of the combined state production. The state is set to increase its share to 38 percent in 2005-06.

Total production of cotton by different states stands at 231 lakh bales (excluding loose cotton consumed but not accounted for in state wise production, which stands at 12 lakh bales for both 2004-05 and 2005-06), in the year 2004-05.

Revised cotton production for the year 2005-06 were projected 232 lakh bales, an increase of 1 lakh bales. Comparing this figure with 2000-01 performance of 131 lakh bales, it shows 64.5 percent growth.

JN Singh informed that this year, cotton production and exports will rise as past few years witnessed 10-15 percent growth, overall.
