Trade deficit to touch $7.613bn

Statistics issued by Planning Commission reveled that for the fiscal year 2006-07 country's trade deficit will be $7.613 billion with export target of $19.797 billion against import target of $27.410 billion.

Government's revised export and import targets were $16.777 billion and $23.629 billion respectively with trade deficit of $6.852 billion.

Government is expecting to earn $11,603 million from the exports of yarn, readymade garments, tents, canvas, hosiery, towels and bed wear and $1,015 million from the exports of leather, carpets, fish and synthetic textile in next fiscal year.

Meanwhile, Planning Commission website carries the information that the design capacity of the textile / garment sector is being upgraded by hiring foreign experts on long term basis (Rs 50 million).
