Smuggling of textiles and clothings is weakening the industry as 57 percent of local demands are met with fraudulent imports, lamented Bineta Samb Bâ, Minister of Industry and Crafts.

Moreover, the negative impacts of globalisation and competition from foreign goods have added fuel to the ongoing fire raging within the industry, said Bâ.

However, she said the inefficiencies in the industry could not be ignored.

Textile industry has been considered as the first among series of five sectors under Strategy of Accelerated Growth (SCG) by Government.

The scheme was launched in January 2005 to promote country's economy.

But, industry insiders believe that labour intensive traditional textile sector should be developed and supported to ensure its competitiveness.
