With the intention of doubling the turnover for local apparel and textile businesses, a US $3.6-million DesignTex Business export center would be built in Horowhenua.

This center is expected to bring $12 million to Horowhenua and $40 million to surrounding areas from Wairarapa to the Manawatu.

Industry group has applied for funding from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and the initiative can pay up to $2 million over three years.

If the centre approves funding, DesignTex Business export center should be fully functional in 12 months.

Upon the project being approved by NZTE, Kapiti and Horowhenua district councils plan to invest a combined $45,000 this year.

Textile industry was the biggest employer in the Kapiti-Horowhenua area and aims to have 40 businesses signed up in coming years.
