Mat weavers benefit more thru exports

Weavers in Bhavani region are benefiting with better profit margin by exporting mats than to sell in domestic market.

Mat weavers make customized mat as per the needs of exporters.

These exported mats mainly used as dining table and bathroom approaches by the consumers abroad.

Consumers abroad demand mats small in size usually 13 inch wider, where as local consumers ask for wider sized mats almost 34 inches big.

Officers of Elango Weavers' Cooperative Society stated that minimum size of mats enable women to get employment.

Weavers get 21 percent profit margin on mat made for export purpose against 15 percent in domestic mats.

Before a decade, Elango Weavers' Cooperative Society reported loss of Rs23.17 lakh, which has reduced to Rs4.5 lakh due to exports.
