Lack of information and communication between companies and apathy in effort to explore opportunities are the reasons behind the abysmal level of trade between Vietnam and Turkey.
Trade promotion tours have been held by Vietnam in Turkey in recent years to assist the local firms to find out the market potential but they have been unable to forge any trade relations, informed Deputy Minister of Trade Do Nhu DInh.
17 companies involved in the business of construction material, garments, manufacturing, and petroleum attended the seminar.
Vietnam's export to Turkey consists of items like footwear, clothing, electronic components, wood products, machinery and chemicals but the two-way trade was only US $103 million in 2005, just one percent of the exports of each country.
DInh singled out agriculture, handicrafts, footwear, textile and garments as the sectors with high potential for trade between Vietnam and Turkey.
In the third meeting of Vietnamese-Turkish Joint Economic and Trade Committee held in Ha Noi, both sides agreed to enhance bilateral trade by better coordination between trade promotion agencies and their Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
