Antonio Fernando, the Mozambican Minister of Industry and Trade has urged David Whitehead and Sons (DWS) to export textile to his country as it was unjust that they had to buy it from Far East when it was available in neighbouring Malawi.
He was on a visit to Sable Farming, Universal Industries and DWS along with his Malawian counterpart Ken Lipenga. He informed that purpose of his visit was to soften up and speed up the trade between the two countries.
Fernando said that to meet the excessive demands, his country had to import the textiles from far-east which could be done away with if Malawi and other regional countries were supplying the textiles to Mozambique.
Faizal Latif, Chairman of DWS informed that his company would consider the proposal seriously and at the same time urged the Government to curb the influx of imported textiles which was harming the local textile industry.
Lipenga assured the industry saying that his Government would come down heavily on the frauds and informed that Government wishes to promote local cotton sector and this can easily be done if the cotton is bought at local levels.
