Export of agricultural products has shown recovery this year in Mozambique with almost all the commodities earning good revenues as total export earning rose by 35.9 percent from $801.9 million dollars in 2005 to $1.124 billion dollar during the same January-June 2006 period.

Poor international prices of cotton notwithstanding, Mozambique cotton export rose by 10 percent to $19.2 million during the first half of the year compared to $17.4 million it was for the same period last year. Products like cashew, sugar and tobacco have registered impressive export figures as well.

Exception in this entire lot has been the export of timber which dropped by 54 percent from $14.7 million to $6.8 million.

Imports have also increased by 27.2 percent from $1.029 to $1.29 billion dollars which is less compared to export figures thereby reducing the gap between the two from $227.4 to $165.6 million.

One of the biggest contributors to the import bill is fuel which has shot up to $ 143 million from $92.5, an increase of 54.6 percent. Imports of cars have also shot up by 11 percent.
