China's textile industry has been growing rapidly and because of textile boom cotton imports of the country have increased to 3.03 million tons crossing last year's import figures, according to Vice Minister of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Bi Jingquan.
Cotton imports earn more foreign exchange for China as industry exported US $115 billion worth of textiles last year, up 20.6 percent over 2004.
Last year total cotton production was 5.7 million tons which is two third of the total cotton demand in the country. In current year 5.27 million hectares have been planted to cotton, an increase of 200,000 hectares, according to data of the National Bureau of Statistics.
China entered World Trade Organization in 2001 and from very next year since 2002 China's cotton imports have been rising.
