For the period of July-October 2006, share of textile sector in the total exports of the country came down to 58 percent.
Compared to same period of 2005, textile exports have declined by 9 percent to $3.2 billion for the period of July-October 2006.
Only five items out of thirteen included in textile group posted growth in exports. Cotton Cloth, Bed Wear and Readymade Garments which share 50 percent of export items registered a decline of 18.5, 19.3 and 7.2 percent respectively.
During July-October 2006, import of textile machinery also declined by 33 percent compared to same period of previous year.
The main problem faced by textile industry is global competition where manufacturing cost is less compared to Pakistan.
Government has given all possible incentives to the industry in the form of textile packages and R&D support but textile manufacturers are not concentrating on improving quality and design, as a result industry is losing share in international textile markets quickly.
