Government had promised cash incentives of Tk1.5 billion to exporters before Eid-ul-Azha, but only only Tk1 billion has been allocated. Exporters are under the debt of Tk6.84 billion.

Government has offered incentives much late. Due to certain formalities of central bank, exporters will not be able to avail funds prior to Eid.

Exporters complained of not receiving any incentives and their problems have multiplied due to this delay. Moreover, political unrest has already placed them in a miserable financial situation.

But BGMEA President S M Fazlul Hoque is hoping for clearance of incentives ahead of Eid, which starts on January 1, 2007. Purpose of giving incentives is enabling export sector to maintain competitive prices in global markets.

Government owes payment of Tk3.56 billion to apparel industry, Tk234.3 million to leather sector, Tk694.8 million to private jute sector, Tk26.5 million to Government jute sector and Tk372.70 million to agriculture industry.
