Due to dispute between local and foreign ship owners, more than 10,000 tons of raw jute have been piled up at Mongla port for past two months.

The raw jute, which was supposed to be exported to Pakistan and African countries, has been blocked as local owners are not able to provide ships.

They are also objecting on foreign vessels carrying these cargos under Bangladesh Flag Vessel (Protection) Ordinance, 1982.

As per the ordinance, domestic vessels will be given priority in exporting cargo from the country.

Exporters pointed out that if this situation prevails, jute exports to Pakistan will be significantly affected.

As demand for jute in Pakistan is high, it imports about 100,000 tons per annum.

Even demand of jute in international market is increasing as revenue worth Tk1,000 crore was generated from exports in 2006.
