Trade deficit continues to surge

During July 2006-February 2007 period exports recorded slight growth of 3.86 percent from US $10.500 billion to $10.906 billion.

However, imports rose by 9.95 percent to $19.797 billion during the same period.

Problems are rising for Pakistan as trade deficit is increasing rapidly. During the period trade deficit expanded 18.47 percent to $8.89 billion, as against same period the previous year.

In February alone trade deficit touched $1.276 billion, representing year-on-year climb of 30.5 percent.

Statistics show that while imports registered a surge of over 16.3 percent, exports grew only 5.4 percent, in February. Exports were significantly lower at $1.295 billion than imports, which stood at $2.572 billion.
