With domestic garment sector's requirements being fulfilled through imports, cotton denim industry is losing its strength.

Cotton denim fabric exports, which stood at US $23.27 million in 2004, fell 96.1 percent to $9,11,000 in 2005. Exports further dropped 53.6 percent to $4,22,000 during 2006.

Demand goes down as local garment production declines and manufacturers look up to imports to meet them. Imports had slipped 41 percent in 2005, and further went down 22.7 percent to $17.258 million in 2006.

US is the biggest importer and also the largest exporter at $10.969 million. Other suppliers mainly include China, Japan and Mexico.
