Several US Congressmen approached the Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez regarding the monitoring of textile and garment imports from Vietnam.

They expressed concern that keeping a check against these imports could be named as violation of WTO agreement.

Justifying themselves the congressmen said that the observation causes tension among the countries.

This monitoring system slashes at many benefits of Vietnam, which was granted Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status, earlier this year.

Even the retailers have criticized this system, saying it will not only adversely affect Vietnam but also the US.

Senetors have strongly opposed the monitoring system. However, they also said that if the program is enforced, it should follow certain regulations.

They said that monitoring should be restricted to only particular product categories evidence of 'material abuse'.

The system should be applied to products that the US manufactures have requested monitoring.
