In order to probe cases of illegal re-export by Hong Kong textile and clothing manufacturers, American and Hong Kong Customs will jointly carry out a two-week investigation beginning August 10. However, this inquiry will be based on the total output.

In the first half of 2007, the total export value of Hong Kong's textile and clothing was US $11.033 billion, up 9.35 percent than the same period last year. Of this, the export value of textile was $4.541 billion, up 2.02 percent. The export value of clothing was $6.491 billion, up 15.11 percent.

China Textile Import and Export Committee expressed that though China has been strictly ruled out of carrying out any illegal re-exporting activity, some enterprises in the country are not ruled out.

Factually, most textile enterprises of Hong Kong have moved their factories to Mainland China. Only about 2,000 textile enterprises remain in Hong Kong and these mainly produce high value products.

EU may carry out similar investigation against some Chinese shoes enterprises that are suspected to have avoided paying anti-dumping tax by illegally re-exporting to Hong Kong and Macao.
