In June 2007, Vietnam's textile and apparel industry imported US $250 million worth of raw materials for the local production, representing growth of 42.9 percent as compared to the same period of 2006. Top materials imported included cotton, fibre and thread.
During the first half this year, the imports turnover of the materials recorded $1.12 billion, year-on-year rise of 10.1 percent.
In the first two weeks of July, the figure climbed to $80 million. Sharp growth was for all key materials, with cotton at 30 percent, fibre at 25 percent and thread at 73 percent in comparison with same period March this year.
Most textile and apparel materials were imported from China, Taiwan and Thailand as they offer lower costs and reasonably easy transportation.
