Cotton imports slide in July

Statistics reveal that in July 2007, China imported 2,29,000 tons of cotton, a drop of 9.3 percent from June and a decrease of 21.1 percent from the same period last year. In the first seven months of this year, country imported around 1.40 million tons cotton in total, down 48.8 percent compared to last year.

In the present cotton year, which runs from September to July, total imports reached nearly 2.01 million tons, decreasing 47.22 percent from the same time in 2005. Total import quota for cotton issued by China in 2007 was of 3.494 million tons. However, actual realization was only 40 percent.

Although in July, cotton import price showed a seesaw trend, overall increase in price can be observed.

Considering that import tariff is one percent, the price touched 13,085 yuan per ton, which was 1,415 yuan lower than that of domestic cotton type 328 for this period.
