In order to expand the country's textile market and boost its exports, the Government has floated the idea of setting up dedicated textile cargo-handling facilities at major international airport and sea ports.
The Government's move comes in the backdrop of its plan to enhance India's textile market to $115 billion by 2011-12. It has also pegged export earning at $55 billion by that time.
Accordingly, a Group of Ministers (GoM) panel set directions upon which the proposals were formulated. The GoM comprised of Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Commerce Minister Kamal Nath.
Sources said facilities for apparel export and import cargo will be built at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) Mumbai, Mumbai port, Chennai port and the Tuticorin port.
International airports of cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore are also being considered.
