Customs data reveal that from January to July 2007, China imported a total of 1.4047 million tons of cotton, showing a substantial plunge of 48.77 percent. Total import value marked US $1.9036 billion, a decrease of 48.15 percent from the same period last year.
Cotton imports in July were mainly from the US with volume reaching 1,64,500 tons, a slight decline from the previous month. However, this accounted for over 70 percent of China's total cotton imports for the month.
In the first three months of 2007, China imported cotton mainly from India, but from April onwards, Chinese import from US gained strong momentum. Compared with the same period previous year, the country's total cotton imports from January to July 2007 showed a major decline of 53.98 percent.
Australia stood as the second major import market, which amounted to 16,900 tons. Cotton imports from Uzbekistan reached 16,000 tons, ranking third. From India, the country imported over 7,000 tons of cotton during July.
The countries which added to the import market list of China during July are Benin, Cameroon, Mali, Mexico, Ivory Coast, Togo, Turkey, Egypt, Sudan and Uganda.
Shandong, Jiangsu, Beijing, Shanghai were the main places which imported cotton during July this year.
July cotton imports of Shandong Province amounted to 56,400 tons, and total imports from January to July achieved 5,27,700 tons, a decrease of 41.74 percent.
Jiangsu imported 41,500 tons with a total 249,700 tons during January to July, a plunge of 20.03 percent.
Few other cotton importing areas like Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong also witnessed a drop from the same period last year.
