Swimming suit exports show mixed trend

The General Customs Department revealed that in the first ten months of 2007, Vietnam exported 3.6 million swimming suits worth US $26.9 million, which plunged 11.9 percent in terms of volume but achieved a growth of 8.8 percent in value compared to the same period 2006.

According to statistics, in October, around 515 thousand pieces of swimming costume worth $3.5 million were exported which was a strong rebound after drops in second quarter and in the early third quarter. This represented month-on–month rise of 107.4 and 82.7 percent, in volume and value respectively.

During this period, although US remained the biggest buyer, Vietnam experienced a strong slump in this market. Around 2.4 million pieces worth $17.1 million were consumed, giving a fall of 23.1 and 5.3 percent respectively against same period 2006. The region accounted for 66.1 percent of total swimming suits exports turnover of Vietnam.

However, exports to EU enjoyed a good growth in the exports of swimming suits. The shipment to the EU included 603 thousand pieces, totaled $4.1 million, surging by 19.5 and 13.7 percent. Of these, growth of Germany was at 9.5 percent, Italy for 89.1 percent and to UK it was 38.4 percent.

In the Asian region, Japanese enterprises purchased 324 thousand swimming suits for $2.4 million, up by 43.7 and 57.3 percent over the 10 month period 2006.
