The only existing textile plant-Utexrwa in Rwanda (east-central Africa) has uncovered its desire to increase its investments in the production of silk and cotton so as to rapidly boost export revenue and generate more employment in the region.

With regard to this Mr Raj Rajendran, managing director of Utexrwa affirmed “Our plan of converting the capacity gradually to silk production is with an investment of US $5 million. We expect to see an export sales turnover of about $15-20 million per annum in the next four to five years”.

What was more encouraging is the fact that even last year the manufacturing sector in Rwanda saw an expansion of 17 percent and there has already been a huge amount of investment in the infrastructure that will, in the long run, sustain industrial growth.

For boosting demand in the region, the company has been planning to produce Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs). Moreover, the company aims to reach a production of 150 million ITNs against the 18 million produced by Tanzania every year.

Besides, the projected investment would also yield over 7000 job opportunities in farms and rural areas and another 500 jobs in the industry itself.
