According to reports gathered from Vietnamese General Trade department of Customs, the country imported near about 212,000 tons of cotton worth US $268 million in 2007.

The figures demonstrate a jump of 17 and 22.4 percent respectively, in terms of both volume and value over 2006. In order to meet the demand of local production, the country has to depend on imports a lot, which has become a matter of concern for the industry experts.

Last year, in the list of top cotton suppliers, US stood first. Vietnam sourced round about 64,000 tons of cotton, valued at $81 million from the region. The other countries, that supplied cotton, include India, Taiwan, Switzerland.
