Only one instance of trade war between US & China

Till date, China has adopted trade restriction measures only once against the US, that too in retaliation against the one imposed by the US on imports of textiles and clothing in 1983 and also achieved a level of deterrent to a certain extent.

In 1983, talks on foreign trade in textiles and clothing could not reach a logical conclusion, due to which the US announced a unilateral ban on imports from the sector. In retaliation, China also suspended imports of agricultural products.

Due to which agricultural lobbyists and US Congressmen were up in arms against the decision of the US and finally the US was forced to make some concessions in imports from China. This is the only instance of a trade war between the two countries.
