Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has requested the Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA) to call off its decision which restricts the consumption of electricity in all the export-oriented garment units during peak hours in the holy month of Ramadan.

The knit garment industry has huge share in export trade of knit garment and considerable potential in earning foreign exchange. Despite this fact, the DESA in a letter to all export-oriented garment units has informed that DESA would not let them use electricity from 5 pm to 11 pm during Ramadan, stated Alamgir Hossain Talukder, acting secretary of BKMEA.

This decision would compel those manufacturing units to discontinue production, which requires to go on to meet the export orders, said Alamgir Hossain Talukder.

If the manufacturers fail to produce and export goods in time, the buyers would call off export orders and the country has to suffer huge loss of foreign exchange.

Alamgir Hossain Talukder also pointed out that in this competitive market, lead-time has become very crucial. He also called this decision a 'self-destructive'.
