Textile sector jittery over low-priced Chinese goods

Murmurs of discontent are beginning to show in the textile and clothing markets of Indonesia over the implementation of the FTA between China and ASEAN countries.

The textile and clothing sector had vehemently opposed implementing the FTA from January 1 and instead asked for three year moratorium to become competitive.

According to a few textile traders, compared to price of a locally produced metre of fabric, it is cheaper to produce and sell a garment at the same price from imported Chinese fabrics.

This is making domestic textile manufacturers jittery, since traders would shift their loyalty to Chinese made goods, due to the competitive rates.
