US accounts for major volume of cotton imports

In 2009, China's cotton imports totaled to 1.95 million tons, down 34 percent from the previous year. These imports came from 39 countries and regions across the globe.

Of this, US cotton accounted for 48.36 percent, Indian cotton accounted for 16.8 percent, Uzbekistan's cotton accounted for 10 percent, Australian cotton accounted for 5.85 percent, Brazilian cotton accounted for 3.27 percent and that from Burkina Faso accounted for 3.5 percent.

Amongst the reasons for rejection of imported cotton were; for grade 8.05 percent, length was 1.47 percent, fineness accounted for 3.76 percent and rejections due to strength touched 5.6 percent.
