Ethiopian textile sector plans to double exports

Textile exports for the 2009-10 fiscal fetched over US $25 million to the country's economy, as revealed by the Textile Industry Development Institute.

Yewlsew Lalelet, Director of the Textile Industry Development Institute said that, the revenue was generated by exporting over 6.5 tons of textile products to different countries.

He mentioned that, various businesses including AYKA Addis Textile Investment Group, Weynu Karten Trade plc, Almeda Textile Factory, Adama Spinning Development and Kombolcha Textile Factory, contributed to the exports.

He further stated that, amongst other countries the exports were mainly towards Turkey, USA, China, Sudan and Cameroon.

The export figures recorded for the 2009-10 fiscal are up by $11 million from those registered in 2008-09, he said and added that, in the new fiscal year, they intend to double these figures.

Also it has been observed that, over 70 textile factories in the country have added over 30,000 new jobs for the citizens.
