To surmount the problem of raw material dearth, Kerala's export-driven coir industry has taken a decision to buy yarn from the state of Tamil Nadu. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting held to find out corrective measures to tackle the problem of coir fibre and yarn shortage.

Around 200,000 tons of coir fibre is required by the coir industry at Alappuzha, but the local production is just around 50,000 tons. Moreover, labour shortage is also another issue which the industry is facing, particularly in the spinning sector.

In this regard, a meeting between the coir department officials of Kerala and the representatives of Tamil Nadu Industries department will be held to enter into an agreement on coir yarn supply.
