Addressing a function organized by the Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Prime Minister Khaleda Zia stated government would take rapid actions to reopen the land port at Benapole allowing import of knit yarn.

The BKMEA, which has been demanding the removal of ban for a long time, has stressed upon issues of lead-time and cost for importing knit yarn.

This move would fulfil the reasonable demand of the association and lead to greater export earnings and growth in knitwear sub-sector.

However, all positive developments may now reverse if it is decided to resume yarn import through land port.

The association says that they want import through land port to cut down lead-time. But shrewd observers view that their main objective is to take advantage of smuggled yarn.
