Pakistan's textile & apparel exports up 18.85% in July-May FY21

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 18.85 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms in the first eleven months of fiscal 2020-21 that began on July 1. During the eleven-month period, Pakistan earned $13.748 billion from textile and apparel exports, compared to exports of $11.567 billion in July-May 2019-20, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose by a sharp 32.70 per cent year-on-year to $3.414 billion during the eleven-month period ending May 31, 2021, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up 14.35 per cent to $2.706 billion.

Among textiles, cotton yarn exports decreased by 1.60 per cent to $896.034 million in July-May 2020-21, as against exports of $910.577 million made during the corresponding period of 2019-20. Exports of cotton fabric also declined by 0.97 per cent and were valued at $1.716 billion during the period under discussion.

Bedwear exports, on the other hand, increased by 24.60 per cent to $2.472 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports increased 43.24 per cent year-on-year to $575.627 million, while imports of synthetic and artificial silk yarn rose 30.93 per cent to $622.267 million during the period under review. Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan increased by 20.65 per cent year-on-year to $490.759 million during the eleven-month period.

In fiscal 2019-20 ending June 30, textile and garment exports from Pakistan decreased by 6.01 per cent to $12.526 billion over $13.327 billion exports in the previous fiscal.
