Pakistan's textile exports down 7.34% in July-May

The value of textile and garment exports made by Pakistan decreased by 7.34 per cent year-on-year in the first eleven months of the fiscal year 2015-16, according to the latest data.

During July-May 2015-16, Pakistan earned $11.468 billion from textiles and apparel exports compared to exports worth $12.377 billion made in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed.

Category-wise, knitwear exports fell by 1.73 per cent year-on-year to $2.153 billion during the eleven-month period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 4.84 per cent to $1.993 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $76.002 million during the period under review, showing a sharp drop of 48.04 per cent compared to exports of $146.259 million made during the same period of the previous fiscal. Likewise, cotton yarn exports fell by 32.05 per cent to $1.174 billion, as against exports of $1.728 billion made during July-May 2014-15.

Exports of cotton fabric dropped 9.25 per cent to $2.065 billion during the period under review, while bedwear exports declined by 3.42 per cent to $1.861 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports dropped 7.96 per cent year-on-year to $442.448 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk yarn declined by 5.77 per cent to $581.835 million.

However, the value of textile machinery imports during the period increased by 1.89 per cent year-on-year to $419.258 million. (RKS)
