Pakistan's textile exports fall 1.65% y-o-y in H1 FY17

The value of textile and garment exports made by Pakistan decreased by 1.65 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms in first half of fiscal 2016-17, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. During July-December 2016-17, Pakistan earned $6.156 billion from textiles and apparel exports compared to exports worth $6.259 billion made in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Category-wise, knitwear exports showed a slight increase of 0.17 per cent year-on-year to $1.193 billion during the six-month period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 5.87 per cent to $1.101 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $35.886 million during the period under review, showing a sharp drop of 49.87 per cent compared to exports of $71.583 million made during the same period of the previous fiscal. Likewise, cotton yarn exports fell by 7.17 per cent to $650.881 million, as against exports of $701.191 million made during the same period in 2015-16.

Exports of cotton fabric dropped 5.57 per cent to $1.048 billion during July-December 2016, while bedwear exports increased by 4.66 per cent to $1.043 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports dropped 18.74 per cent year-on-year to $212.692 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk increased 0.54 per cent to $314.426 million.

The value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan increased by 11.28 per cent year-on-year to $258.641 million during the same period.

In fiscal 2015-16, Pakistan’s textile and garment exports decreased by 7.42 per cent year-on-year to $12.455 billion. (RKS)
