Pakistan's textile exports stable in H1 FY18

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan remained almost stable with a marginal decrease of 0.06 per cent in dollar terms in first half of fiscal 2018-2019, compared to the same months of previous year. During the period, Pakistan earned $6.645 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to exports of $6.641 billion in July-December 2017, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 10.51 per cent year-on-year to $1.474 billion during the six-month period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments increased 0.89 per cent to $1.260 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $14.062 million during the period under review, showing a decrease of 73.62 per cent compared to exports of $53.304 million during the same period of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports showed decline of 17.14 per cent and fetched $548.162 million, as against exports of $661.513 million made during July-December 2017. Exports of cotton fabric decreased marginally by 1.34 per cent and were valued at $1.052 billion during the first half of fiscal 2018-19, while bedwear exports increased by 3.27 per cent to $1.161 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were up 16.61 per cent year-on-year to $288.491 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk fell by 5.99 per cent to $302.227 million.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan declined by 12.46 per cent year-on-year to $ 252.674 million during the period under review.

In fiscal 2017-18 ending June 30, textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 8.67 per cent to $13.530 billion over $12.450 billion exports in the previous fiscal. (PC)
