Pakistan's textile exports up 7.18% in July-Jan FY18

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 7.18 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms in the first seven months of fiscal 2017-18, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. During July-January 2017, Pakistan earned $7.728 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to $7.210 billion in the same period of previous fiscal.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 13.27 per cent year-on-year to $1.555 billion during the seven-month period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 13.93 per cent to $1.483 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $54.955 million during the period under review, showing an increase of 48.72 per cent compared to exports of $36.951 million during the same months of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports, however, declined 1.42 per cent to $739.267 million, as against exports of $749.923 million made during July-January 2016-17. Exports of cotton fabric too fell 1.59 per cent and were valued at $1.249 billion during the first seven months of the current fiscal, while bedwear exports increased by 5.62 per cent to $1.305 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were up 19.69 per cent year-on-year to $300.087 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk increased 1.41 per cent to $383.936 million.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan jumped 12.10 per cent year-on-year to $343.608 million during the period under review, which shows a rise in confidence among the country’s textile entrepreneurs.

In fiscal 2016-17 that ended on June 30, the value of textile and garment exports made by Pakistan increased by 0.04 per cent to $12.452 billion compared to exports valued at $12.447 billion in 2015-16. (RKS)
