Pakistan's textile exports up 8.67% in 2017-18

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 8.67 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms in fiscal 2017-18 ending June 30, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. During the twelve-month period, Pakistan earned $13.530 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to $12.450 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 15.17 per cent year-on-year to $2.719 billion during the year, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 11.22 per cent to $2.579 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $58.227 million during the period under review, showing an increase of 33.65 per cent compared to exports of $43.567 million during the same months of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports showed increase of 10.30 per cent and fetched $1.371 billion, as against exports of $1.243 billion made during July-June 2016-17. Exports of cotton fabric too rose marginally by 3.17 per cent and were valued at $2.203 billion during the year, while bedwear exports increased by 5.77 per cent to $2.261 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were up 12.03 per cent year-on-year to $543.026 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk increased slightly by 4.51 per cent to $663.612 million.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan dropped 2.10 per cent year-on-year to $545.111 million during the period under review. (RKS)
