Pakistan textile exports down 1.42% in fiscal 2018-19

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan deceased by 1.42 per cent in dollar terms in fiscal 2018-2019, compared to the previous fiscal 2017-2018. During the period, Pakistan earned $13.329 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to exports of $13.520 billion in fiscal 2018-19, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 6.92 per cent year-on-year to $2.898 billion during the one year period, while exports of non-knit readymade garments increased 3.03 per cent to $2.655 billion.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $20.390 million during the period under review, showing a decrease of 64.98 per cent compared to exports of $58.227 million during the same period of the previous fiscal.

Cotton yarn exports showed decline of 17.97 per cent and fetched $1.125 billion, as against exports of $1.371 billion made during fiscal 2018-19. Exports of cotton fabric decreased marginally by 4.64 per cent and were valued at $2.101 billion during the fiscal 2018-19, while bedwear exports increased by 0.06 per cent to $2.262 billion, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were up 7.80 per cent to $585.364 million and imports of synthetic and artificial silk were up by 3.93 per cent to $689.669 million year-on-year. Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan declined by 1.06 per cent year-on-year to $537.992 million during the period under review.

In fiscal 2017-18 ending June 30, textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 8.67 per cent to $13.520 billion over $12.450 billion exports in the previous fiscal. (PC)
