Thailand's fabric imports from China rise over 50% in Jan-Sept 2023

Both China and Thailand are among the major textile and garment exporting nations, but Thailand is more dependent on Chinese supplies of not only fabric and yarn but also finished garments. Thailand’s dependence on China increased in terms of fabric imports and it reached over 50 per cent during the first three quarters of the last year.

According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, China’s share in Thailand’s fabric imports increased to 51.93 per cent in January-September 2023. Thailand’s fabric imports totalled $901.605 million in the said period. The inbound shipment from China was valued at $468.218 million. However, the imports from China decreased by 14.83 per cent from $549.742 million in January-September 2022.

During the year 2022, Thailand’s total fabric imports were $1,390.448 million. Out of which, the imports from China were $711.772 million, which was 51.19 per cent of the total imports. Earlier, China’s share in Thailand’s fabric imports was 48.40 per cent of total imports of $1,226.263 million in 2021. The inbound shipment from China was $593.552 million in the same period. In 2020, the import from China was $528.151 million (48.93 per cent) out of total import of $1,079.405 million. The import from China was $608.131 million (45.78 per cent) out of total import of $1,328.377 million in 2019, as per TexPro.

Thailand’s yarn import was $1,071.121 million in January-September 2023. Out of which, the import from China was $205.651 million, accounting for 37.98 per cent of the total. The inbound shipment from China declined by 22.07 per cent from $263.888 million in January-September 2022.
