US textile & apparel import volume rise 18% in Jan-Feb 2025

US textile & apparel import volume rise 18% in Jan-Feb 2025

The US recorded an 18.53 per cent increase in the volume of textile and apparel imports across all types of fibres. These imports totalled 16,753.749 million square metre equivalents (SME) in January–February 2025, compared with 14,134.641 million SME in the same months of 2024, according to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA).

During this period, apparel imports rose by 9.81 per cent to 4,421.497 million SME, up from 4,026.539 million SME in January–February 2024. Imports of textile (non-apparel) products reached 12,332.252 million SME in the same period of 2025, marking a 22.00 per cent increase compared with 10,108.101 million SME in the same period of 2024.

The import volume of cotton products increased by 11.99 per cent to 2,957.447 million SME during the review period, compared with 2,640.725 million SME in the same period of the previous year. Imports of man-made fibre (MMF) products reached 13,364.172 million SME in January–February 2025, up from 11,088.895 million SME in the same months of 2024, as reported by OTEXA.

Meanwhile, US exports of textiles and apparel made from all types of fibres inched up by 0.62 per cent to 344.600 million kg during the review period, compared with 342.474 million kg in January–February 2024.

US apparel exports increased by 4.80 per cent to 105.341 million kg. Fabric exports were recorded at 112.178 million kg, showing a 1.14 per cent increase compared with January–February 2024, while yarn exports decreased by 3.90 per cent to 137.249 million kg.

US textile exports continued their volatile downward trend in 2025 as foreign buyers remained cautious about textile imports.

During 2024, the country’s textile and apparel imports by volume increased by 15.23 per cent to 106,636.793 million SME. Of this, apparel imports rose by 5.95 per cent to 25,766.238 million SME, while textile imports surged by 18.54 per cent to 80,870.554 million SME. Meanwhile, US exports of textiles and apparel declined by 2.15 per cent to 2,149.686 million kg during the review period. Apparel exports decreased by 1.57 per cent to 681.355 million kg, fabric exports declined by 0.22 per cent to 718.272 million kg, and yarn exports fell by 1.76 per cent to 853.376 million kg.

In 2023, the US experienced a 12.28 per cent decline in the volume of textile and apparel imports across all types of fibres, with total imports amounting to 92,783.4 million SME.
