US textile & apparel import volume up, export volume down in Jan-Aug

  • From January to August 2024, US textile and apparel imports increased by 6.68 per cent to 66,428.351 million SME, driven by higher imports of cotton and man-made fibre products.

The US recorded a 6.68 per cent increase in the volume of textile and apparel imports across all types of fibres. These imports amounted to 66,428.351 million square metre equivalents (SME) from January to August 2024, compared with 62,266.478 million SME in the same period of 2023, according to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA).

During the same period, apparel imports rose by 1.41 per cent to 16,715.926 million SME, up from 16,483.159 million SME in January to August 2023. Imports of textile (non-apparel) products reached 49,712.425 million SME in January to August 2024, marking an 8.58 per cent increase from 45,783.319 million SME in the same period the previous year.

The import volume of cotton products increased by 5.59 per cent to 11,140.116 million SME during the period under review, compared with 10,550.170 million SME in the same period the previous year. Imports of man-made fibre (MMF) products reached 53,699.799 million SME from January to August 2024, up from 50,342.768 million SME in January to August 2023, according to the OTEXA report.

Meanwhile, exports of textiles and apparel made from all types of fibres from the US fell by 3.24 per cent to 1,450.080 million kg during the review period, compared with 1,498.661 million kg from January to August 2023. Apparel exports decreased by 4.49 per cent to 446.015 million kg. Yarn exports stood at 586.754 million kg, representing a 2.10 per cent decline compared to the same period in 2023, while fabric exports increased by 0.80 per cent to 494.316 million kg.

US textile exports continued their volatile downward trend in the first eight months of 2024, as foreign buyers remained cautious about textile imports.

In 2023, the US had experienced a 12.28 per cent decline in the volume of textile and apparel imports across all types of fibres, with total imports amounting to 92,783.4 million SME.
