US textile exports steady at $14 bn in Jan-July '15

The exports of textile and apparel from United States remained steady at $14 billion in January-July 2015, nearly same as the value registered in the corresponding period last year, according to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel, US Department of Commerce.

Category-wise, apparel exports rose marginally by 4.2 per cent year-on-year to $3.54 billion, while textile mill products were down 2.13 per cent to $10.466 billion during the first seven months of 2015.

Among apparel, the highest growth of 45.85 per cent was registered in exports of women's and girls’ woven shirts, whereas a maximum decline of 13.06 per cent was seen in exports of women's and girls’ ensembles.

Among textile mill products, fabric exports were marginally down by 0.72 per cent year-on-year to $5.378 billion, while yarn and made-up article exports declined by 4.80 per cent and 1.87 per cent respectively to $2.933 billion and $2.154 billion.

Country-wise, Mexico, Canada and Honduras together accounted for more than half of the total US textile and clothing exports during the period under review. The US supplied $3.928 billion worth of textiles and apparel to Mexico during the seven-month period, followed by $3.012 billion to Canada and $902 million to Honduras.

In recent years, the US textile and clothing exports have been growing at a slow but steady pace. They have grown from $19.752 billion in 2010 to $22.432 billion in 2011, $22.656 billion in 2012, $23.665 billion in 2013 and $24.418 billion in 2014. (RKS)
