In January-August 2023, the majority of US textile imports comprised apparel, amounting to $53.454 billion, down 22.77 per cent compared to $69.215 billion in January-August 2022. Non-apparel imports accounted for $17.918 billion, a decline of 20 per cent from $22.399 billion in the same period the previous year, according to the latest Major Shippers Report released by the US Department of Commerce. Both segments saw a decrease in inbound shipments.
Among the top ten apparel suppliers to the US, imports from none of the countries registered an increase. The imports from China and Cambodia declined by 29.47 per cent and 27.28 per cent, respectively. Imports from Pakistan dropped by 29.24 per cent, Vietnam by 24.57 per cent, Indonesia by 27.28 per cent, Honduras by 22.26 per cent, Bangladesh by 21.77 per cent, and India by 21.59 per cent.
Among the top ten suppliers in the non-apparel category, only imports from Mexico experienced year-on-year growth, rising by 6.27 per cent. Imports from China, conversely, declined by 26.13 per cent. Inbound shipments from other countries, including Vietnam, Turkiye, Pakistan, and Canada, also decreased. The imports from South Korea declined by 22.43 per cent and from India by 22.80 per cent.
During the period under review, US textile and apparel imports totalled $71.373 billion. Man-made fibre products accounted for $37.087 billion, while cotton products were valued at $29.645 billion. Wool products constituted $2.639 billion, and products from silk and vegetable fibres were worth $2.002 billion.
